The 2008 CTGA of BC Board of Directors

Shirley Hartwell – President

  • Co-founder of the CTGA in 1989, has served as first Vice President, Locations, Fundraising and Membership Director and is our Historian. Currently Board Chairperson on our Education Committee for Certification.
  • 1980 - Started in the sightseeing profession and is a “Certified Tour Guide,” currently a Tour Director in Canada and Alaska and a Vancouver city guide.
  • 1983-1995, owned her own business supplying Step-on guides.
  • Does training workshops for Tour Guides / Tour Directors.

George Bell – Vice President

  • Co-founder of CTGA in 1989, has served five years as President, also as Locations, Membership and Newsletter Director over the years. Currently on the Education Committee for Certification.
  • 1965 started in the tourism profession and is a “Certified Tour Guide,” plus a Tour Director in Canada and Internationally.
  • Operates a step-on guide service, travel agency and tour company.
  • Gives seminars about guiding, through night school programs, and does some training.

Jeff Veniot – Secretary / Information

  • Became a CTGA member in 1991, served 8 years as President, also as Secretary, Treasurer, Membership and Fundraising Director over the years.
  • Co-Designed and wrote the CTGA of BC website plus “Jeff’s FYI” and is our web facilitator.
  • In the sightseeing profession since 1975 and is a “Certified Tour Guide,” local and long-distance Driver Guide and Step-on Guide.
  • Puts together FAM tours / educational outings for Members and still instructs commentary for guides and drivers.

Tyler Davis - Treasurer

  • A newer Member of the CTGA joining in 2007, serving his first term on our Board.
  • Started in the tourism profession in Ontario during 2004, completing training as a Local Tour Guide / Tour Director.
  • Currently Tour Directing in Eastern and Western Canada.

Barry Sinclair - Locations

  • Became a CTGA Member in 1999, has served as Locations Director before and helped with many special events / FAMS and meetings for Members over the years.
  • Started in the sightseeing profession in 1999 and continues to be a driver / guide in the Vancouver, Victoria and Whistler areas.
  • Many years of visiting other countries, he is a world traveler - doing his dream job!

Margaret Leonard – Fundraising / Networking

  • Became a CTGA Member in 1997 and is serving her first term on the Board.
  • Started in the sightseeing profession in l997 as a tour guide. Now operates her own business leading visitors on historic and informative walking tours of Downtown Vancouver, Gastown, Chinatown and Granville Island.
  • With a background in Tourism Development and the Performing Arts, she has found her calling!

Sabine Arbuckle - Membership

  • Joined the CTGA in 1998 and is serving her first term on the Board.
  • Started in the sightseeing profession as a Local Tour Guide in Ottawa, then as a Tour Director in Ontario before moving to Vancouver.
  • After living in Germany for 12 years she now guides many German groups.
  • Does local Vancouver Tours / meet and greets / conferences / Rockies tours, plus enjoys volunteering at Tourism Vancouver.
